The Importance of Customer Service Certifications for IT Professionals

IT customer service certifications

TLDR: Certification is Important for IT Careers

• Certifications help IT professionals fill knowledge gaps and strengthen troubleshooting skills.

• Customer service certifications improve communication, empathy, and professionalism with end-users.

• Technical skills alone aren’t enough. The best IT pros combine competence with people skills.

• Certifications paired with real-world experience can lead to better career opportunities and higher pay.

• Continuous learning shows initiative, builds confidence, and helps IT professionals stay relevant.

Why Customer Service Certifications Matter in IT

When I was first starting as a technical trainer, I didn’t think certifications really mattered. I had good reason to believe that, because I’d seen multiple times when someone would come into one of my training seminars with a high-level certification, but no knowledge or experience to back it up. We referred to those as “paper certs.” Frankly, it wasn’t until I got tired of explaining myself and my lack of certification that I decided to get my first, a Windows 95 admin cert. In preparing for the exam, I was surprised to see questions about UNIX and Novell Netware, in addition to questions about Windows and general questions about networking. I passed the test on my first try, but not without some pretty serious sweating! Ultimately, I racked up certifications in Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Active Directory, Linux, Cisco CCNA, CCNA Security, and IPv6 Silver Engineer. During the process of passing those certification exams, I noticed that I was filling in my knowledge gaps. The certification process provides a framework in which you focus on one particular topic, but also broaden your general IT knowledge.

I once attended a day-long seminar on the Linux boot process in which the instructor observed, “The more you know about one operating system, the more you know about them all.”

I frequently had students in my training sessions speak condescendingly about people with certifications, suggesting that certifications were meaningless. The reality, however, is that the combination of current certifications with real-world experience is a powerful mixture that supports better troubleshooting and system design, with fewer configuration errors.

I also noticed that the people who complained about certifications rarely had any of their own.

Professional technical certifications are part of your knowledge acquisition process. The same is true of customer service certifications. Knowledge is power. The more knowledge you have, the more power you’ll have.

Key Certifications for IT Professionals

The most widely held technical certifications are probably the CompTIA A+, Network+, and Security+ series. Others include Google IT Support Professional Certificate, Cisco CCNA, and Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP). Popular Amazon cloud computing certs include AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner and AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate. Popular Microsoft certifications include a variety of role-based, fundamental-level certifications. Possibilities include Microsoft 365 Fundamentals (MS-900), Microsoft Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900), and Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals (AI-900). Frankly, the variety of available certifications can be overwhelming. A simple recommendation is to start with the CompTIA A+ and Network+ certs. They’re both general enough and challenging enough to provide a strong background.

CompTIA, Microsoft, and Cisco focus primarily on technical competencies. ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) is a set of best practices applied to IT. It offers a variety of certifications for IT professionals, including ITIL Foundation, the entry point to ITIL.

The Compassionate Geek course, Customer Service Secrets of Successful IT Pros, focuses on the human side of IT with customer service training specifically for IT people. Students who complete the course are awarded a certificate of completion.

Impact of Certifications on Career Growth

In general, when you hold current certifications, you’re more likely to get promotions and higher compensation. More specifically, research by IDC found that 70% of organizations beleive industry recognized credentials are essential or very important tools for skills training. Research by Pearson VUE, published in their 2026 Value of IT Certification Employer Report, found that 63% of professionals received or expected a job promotion after earning a certification, and, in that same study by Pearson VUE, 76% of employees show increased ability to innovate and enhance processes after earning a certification. The Pearson VUE research also found significant increases in overall IT team performance, including a reduction in IT-related risks.

For MSP owners, having a certified staff is a valuable marketing tool and differentiator.

How to Prepare for IT Customer Service Certification Exams

Study Guides

There is a variety of books available for study leading up to your exam. I’ve had the most success using vendor-approved texts, such as the Cisco Press Official Certification Guide Library. Similar books are available to help you prepare for other exams.

Videos

Similarly, you’ll find many online test prep resources, including many videos on YouTube. Just for grins, I search on YouTube for “comptia a+ prep.” Use this link to see what I found.

Virtualized Environments

Cisco Packet Tracer is a free virtualization tool you can use to build, test, and troubleshoot networks It’s designed to help you prepare for Cisco exams. Download it at this link.

Virtualization software allows you to run multiple, isolated operating systems simultaneously. I used VMWare Workstation Pro and Oracle VM VirtualBox to prepare for Microsoft and Linux certification exams. I also used it when teaching Linux admin classes. VMWare Workstation Pro and Oracle VM VirtualBox are both free to download. Mac users can download Parallels Desktop for free, but it requires a subscription after the initial trial period. (Using virtualization tools sure beats having a test lab with stacks of routers and servers on your dining room table!)

Practice Tests

Practice tests are also important because they not only help you identify what to study, but also help you grow accustomed to taking a certification test.

IT Managers and Supervisors

IT managers and supervisors can support their teams in pursuing certification by paying for successful completion of certification exams and offering other incentives for team members who participate in the certification process.
